Bill Roedy Joins amFAR Board

Bill Roedy joined the amfAR board in October 2010, serving on the board development and communications/social media/marketing committees. Is active in a wide range of corporate social responsibility issues, particularly those that target young people.

Mr. Roedy is the former chairman and CEO of MTV Networks International, where he and his team built from scratch a global operation of 200 channels—the most in the history of TV—and 20 brands (including MTV, Nickelodeon and Comedy Central) in 200 countries.

Prior to MTVNI, Mr. Roedy was a Vice President at HBO for ten years. He was named one of the “Pioneers” of the U.S. cable industry and was inducted into the Cable Hall of Fame in 2015. Earlier he was a career officer in the United States Army where he qualified as an Airborne and Army Ranger and was decorated with the Bronze Star, Air Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, and Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry.

In 1998 Mr. Roedy was named Ambassador for UNAIDS. He was a founding member and chair of the Global Business Coalition on HIV/AIDS from 1998 to 2002, and later chaired the Advisory Board. In 2005, UN Secretary General Kofi Annan appointed him founding chair of the Global Media AIDS Initiative Leadership Committee. In November 2010, he was appointed the first ever Envoy for the Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunization (GAVI), joining the board in 2015 and chairing the subcommittee on independent governance.

Mr. Roedy is founding chairman of the Staying Alive Foundation, which provides young people with resources to fight the AIDS epidemic at the grassroots level, in combination with MTV’s award-winning HIV/AIDS programming. He also serves on the boards of many other foundations, colleges, and businesses. He is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations, the United States Middle East Project, and Seeds of Peace. He is also a Churchill Fellow, appointed by the Churchill National Museum.

His numerous awards include the Individual Business Leadership Award, presented by President Bill Clinton, the International Emmy Founder’s Award, amfAR’s Award of Courage, a Doctors of the World Leadership Award, and the UN Correspondents Association Global Citizen of the Year Award, presented by UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon.

Mr. Roedy holds a Bachelor of Science degree from West Point and an M.B.A. from Harvard. He is an executive producer of the documentary, The Battle of amfAR, which premiered on HBO on World AIDS Day, 2013. He is also the author of What Makes Business Rock, one of CNBC’s Best Books of Summer 2011, and is working on a second book on the art of intelligent perseverance.

He and his Austrian wife, Alexandra, have four children and live in London, England and Miami Beach, FL.
